Chartering

Cultivation of the Intellect

  • Attain a GPA of 2.50 or above as well as be above the all-Men’s average and the all-fraternity average.
  • Have a written academic assistance plan incorporated into the constitution and bylaws.
  • Have 90% of its members in good academic standing as reported to the General Fraternity Scholarship Commissioner.

Leadership Development and Self Governance

  • Send a full delegation (3) to the Beta Theta Pi Convention annually.
  • Send a full delegation (4) to The Institute for Men of Principle annually.
  • Send a full delegation (1) to the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) annually.
  • Send a full delegation (1) to the Beta Wilderness Challenge annually.
  • Send a full delegation (2) to Future’s Quest annually.
  • Receive an excellent financial rating from the General Treasurer.
  • Compile and submit a Constitution and By-laws for colony operations.
  • Complete all reports required by the General Fraternity, including 80% of the colony Strategies and Action Plans for each year.
  • Complete all facets of each officer’s “annual operating calendar” and utilize officer notebooks.

Commitment to Community

  • Adopt a community service organization and conduct one major philanthropic event each year.
  • Have 100% of the membership involved in at least one campus or community organization.

Member Education

  • Submit a complete copy of the pledge education program annually, which is free of any form of hazing.
  • Have a pledge education program that incorporates weekly education on the Men of Principle Initiative's Mission, Vision and Goals.
  • Follow all rituals including initiation ceremonies, officer installations, and chapter meetings--compliance certified by the District Chief and Chapter Counselor.

Responsible Personal Conduct

  • Have an active Kai Committee governed by its constitution, bylaws, The Code of Beta Theta Pi and Beta Theta Pi’s Risk Management policy.
  • Have one member and one advisor trained in substance abuse annually.
  • Host one event regarding alcohol education annually.
  • Have no risk management incidents.
  • Where applicable, the colony or chapter shall reside in a substance-free living environment.

Chapter Advisors

  • Have an active advisory team consisting of a chapter counselor, recruitment advisor, pledge education advisor, risk management advisor and financial advisor.
  • The advisory team must hold quarterly meetings.
  • The advisory team has written duties (which are incorporated into the chapter’s bylaws) and all must attend a General Fraternity Advisory Team Conference.

Member Recruitment

  • Have a membership of 40 active members (at the time of petitioning) or be above the campus average for membership.
  • Conduct Men of Principle Scholarship annually.
  • Initiate at least 80% of all men formally pledged.

Communication

  • Submit colony articles for The Beta Theta Pi magazine for the winter and fall issues to be enclosed in the charter petition.
  • Promptly submit 100% of paperwork required by the General Fraternity annually.

Lifelong Fraternal Brotherhood

  • Publish at least two issues of a parent/area alumni newsletter annually.
  • Each member donates $10 to the chapter fund within the Beta Theta Pi Foundation.
  • Have a plan for housing or similar arrangements for lodging in place as well as an adequate plan for financing.

Miscellaneous

  • Submit a letter of intention to petition by December 1st, which will be reviewed at the winter Board of Trustee meeting.  The District Chief and Chapter Counselor must submit a letter at this time in support of the colony beginning its petitioning process.
  • Meet all of the above-mentioned requirements by December 1st. Further, the colony must continue to meet all of the above requirements during the following spring semester.
*It is our recommendation that a colony charter in 2-3 years.
