While there are over 800 campuses with Greek Life throughout North America, Beta Theta Pi does not want chapters at just any of them. There is a much smaller pool of flagship public and premiere private institutions where Beta will thrive.
When thinking about where Beta’s next chapters will be, there is one word to describe its process…INTENTIONAL! It’s not like we’re throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping something sticks! By being intentional, Beta is committing to selecting the right campuses over merely filling a slot on the calendar.
When a campus is recommended or catches the eye of our expansion department, it is slated for evaluation and analysis and is then talked about among decision makers. Specifically, information is gathered in the following areas:
1. Institution Quality
2. University Support
3. Alumni and Advisor Support
4. Campus Culture
5. Housing
6. Overall Timing
If the campus still seems desirable after talking through the data and questions, often times, a site visit will be the next step in the process. While it is important to gather and discuss the data in 6 areas outlined above, there is only so much numbers can portray. Beta has found extreme value in speaking face to face with University Administration, faculty and staff, potential members, area alumni, and members of the Greek Community to better determine if Beta and the host University are a good fit.
After further discussion, a campus is then targeted as a top choice and negotiations with the university begin to take place. If multiple fraternities are interested in expanding, a presentation competition may occur which determines which fraternity will be asked to expand/recolonize. In other cases, such as a chapter closure, a timeline is negotiated for a future date and the planning process begins.
With months (and even years) of planning leading up to a project, the expansion or recolonization process culminates with a 22 day recruitment process that is staffed by a 3-4 person team of full time Beta employees. Their goal is to recruit men who exemplify Betas principles and challenge others to hold themselves to a higher standard.
